Happy New Year, full moon, and birthday to me! My plan to escape the insanity that would be Phnom Penh paid off. After non-stop travel for a month and a half, coming to the beach to relax and celebrate the New Year worked out perfectly.
Greetings from Sihanoukville, a small string of beaches on the southwest corner of Cambodia. Sitting in the Gulf of Thailand, calm seas and clear water make this area a popular destination for those wanting to get away. Hopping off the bus, my first breath of salt air brought my mind all the way back to the coast of North Carolina. I think I will forever associate the ocean with home.
Beyond a firework display and a few water attacks, I had a relaxing transition into the grand ol’ age of 23. A plate of grilled shrimp, marlin, and squid was my cuisine of choice and a 75 cent draft beer rounded off the meal nicely. I joined hundreds of Cambodians on the beach in the age old tradition of shooting off mortars and Roman candles within feet of one another. Dangerous? Sure…but it’s the New Year!
I will begin my migration north towards Siem Reap and then off to Vietnam within the next few days. Untill then…below are some thoughts and reflections from the trip.

Thoughts on Thinking: Excuse my ramblings
My blog thus far has been descriptive of the where, what, and how of my explorations…however, I have learned an incredible amount regarding culture, world views, and travel.
First off: GUNS. This is one topic I never knew I would find myself discussing on my trip, yet it keeps surfacing during conversation with Europeans. The fact that Americans can own guns completely baffles many people. Why? Well…if one were to look in on the USA you would notice a trend of gun crime. Columbine, Newtown, and recent shootings all become relevant points during discussion. I generally maintain a neurtral stance during these chats, but the topic has caused some heated arguments.
Another trend worth mentioning is how dangerous the US news portrays the world. Hold up a mirror, or come hangout in Cambodia, and take an unbiased peak at our own country. It sounds like the most dangerous place in the world! High school stabbings, Kansas shootings, arsonists, and tornadoes are just a few items that surface with a quick google news search. My point here is…unless you are going to North Korea or present day Ukraine, chances are many of the “dangerous” aspects of a foreign country are glamorized by our ” fabulous” 24 hour news stations. Of course…everything with a grain of salt.
A final reflection is the concept of traveling alone. Have I had moments of loneliness? Sure. Of course I miss my family, girlfriend, friends, and life at home. However, I know I will be back and this trip has existed in my mind for years. I came prepared to eat dinners alone, take extra precautions, and have an open attitude towards meeting people. For those considering such a trip…I would recommend undertaking at least half of it on your own. You learn a lot about yourself whether you want to or not.
I will save the rest of my mind for my own pen and paper. Hope you enjoyed this post! Here are some photos from the past few days.
